Orkestra™-SDS is the software defined storage appliance. Orkestra SDS provides a number of provizioning interfaces including a CINDER plug-in for OpenStack. The Orkestra SDS CINDER plug-in for OpenStack allows any number of storage nodes to be managed by the SDS appliance providing a scaleout block storage solution for the datacenter. Orkestra SDS is part of the Orkestra™ datacenter solution suite. Orkestra™-SDS is a complete data center storage provizioning solution for storage consumers in the datacenter. The set of datacenter storage consumers that can be provisioned are:
- Entire tenant spaces using MPSTOR’s vitual storage array solution MP_VSA.
- Virtual Machines within a tenant space using the OpenStack Horizon dashboard and the MPSTOR CINDER Appliance.
- Datacenter services such as CEPH, SWIFT, LUSTRE using the Orkestra SDS dashboard.
- Datacenter server nodes using the Orkestra SAM dashboard.
Orkestra™-SDS allows the enterprise to start with minimum hardware configuration expand as demand grows. Orkestra™-SDS integrates MPSTOR’s storage management stack (Orkestra™-SAM), and OpenStackTM - the open-source cloud operating system, to produce a turnkey, software defined, storage provizioning platform. Orkestra™-SDS is supplied with a web-based, graphical user interface, which provides a comprehensive range of configuration, administration functionality.
Orkestra™-SDS requires three easy steps to deploy;
- CREATING A STORAGE ZONE: The datacenter administrator creates a storage zone into which Orkestra™-SDS imports all the storage providers assigned to it.
- PROVISIONING STORAGE: Storage is now provisioned by the SDS tools and OpenStack plugins from any of the registered storage providers to any storage consumer in the datacenter.
- MANAGING STORAGE: Orkestra-SDS provides a single pane of management for provisioning, alerting, monitoring, capacity management and storage usage metrics.
Software Defined Storage is based on the principles of storage virtualization, which allows storage services to behave as virtual appliances that run on commodity hardware and that can be launched on demand, releasing hardware resources when their tasks are complete. This enables new storage resources and functionality to be added dynamically, without being tied to dedicated and inflexible storage silos.
